Long Island Bridge Operator Rescued After Falling Through Hole In Deck

Rescue crews were required when a bridge operator on Long Island fell through a hole in the deck and plunged into the frigid waters below, police said.

First responders were dispatched to the Long Beach Bridge shortly after 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, where there were reports of a man who had fallen into the water.

According to police, upon arrival, officers observed a 60-year-old bridge operator who had fallen into the water through a hole in the wooden perimeter of the deck he had been walking on.

With the assistance of the Nassau County Marine Bureau, Aviation Unit and the Emergency Service Unit police were able to pull the victim out of the water and onto a Marine vessel.

Police said the man suffered head trauma and possible hypothermia and was transported to the Long Beach Emergency Center by the Marine Bureau for treatment. The was later transported to another local hospital for further treatment and evaluation.
